Hear Straight from the Candidates

Published by Oakland Rising Action on October 21, 2020

Did you catch our OUSD School Board and City Council Candidate Forums last weekend?
– Watch our OUSD Candidate forum
– Watch our City Council Candidate forum
(Both have ASL interpretation and closed captioning)
“The baseline of expectation on all developments that happen must center community needs first. We are going to need to work collaboratively.”

Carroll Fife, Candidate for City Council, District 3 Candidate

We heard from ORA-endorsed candidates on their vision and platform for a more progressive Oakland. Our forums pushed candidates to articulate their plans to bring racial and economic justice to their public leadership roles. They spoke about how they plan to work with current elected officials to move our city and school board to prioritize the people of Oakland over profits.

Candidate forums continue this Saturday with the Arab American, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (AMEMSA) community and community leaders hosting an event with our District 3 endorsed candidates. The AMEMSA community is strong and growing in Oakland, but so far has little representation in City Hall and other public offices. This forum will provide a space for AMEMSA families to discuss the issues that are important to their communities, and an opportunity for Oakland Rising Action’s progressive candidates to learn more about the AMEMSA communities as they seek to represent the entire district and lift up all flatland communities of color. The event will be live-streamed on Facebook, Arabic translation will be provided, and community members can submit any questions for the candidates and register to get the Zoom link!
