2024 Oakland and Alameda County
General Election Results
We are with you. A week since the election, we at Oakland Rising Action are riding the waves of fear, rage and sadness.
This election was not what any of us wanted for our communities. But we are here, and we are together – in grief and in determination to protect what we love.
We take comfort that here in the Bay Area and in California, we are part of a powerful network of movement organizations who have been preparing for this moment. While billionaires, corporations, and bullies have attempted to use the election to pit working people against each other, we know that when we include everyone – no matter what they look like or where they come from – we create stronger communities.
Every ballot matters in California.
While it is clear that hedge fund billionaire Philip Dreyfus and San Francisco investor Ron Conway succeeded in ousting Mayor Sheng Thao and District Attorney Pamela Price, we residents of the city of Oakland did vote in favor of reducing the impact of big money going forward.
With the passage of Measure OO, public ethics oversight will be strengthened. New rules will limit gifts from lobbyists, address commissioner conflicts of interest, and ensure capacity to implement voter-approved programs like Democracy Dollars. Good governance requires good oversight, so this is one important step forward.
By passing Measure NN, we Oaklanders of different races and different places renewed an existing measure that funds violence reduction services & community policing. The measure will also establish a new commission to oversee violence reduction plans for Oakland and ensure funds are used effectively.
We are also celebrating the election of Ryan Richardson to the role of City Attorney. Ryan’s platform emphasizes transparency, accountability, and protecting the rights of all Oakland residents. We are heartened that he has a deep commitment to justice and an understanding of the law’s power to effect positive change.
We congratulate Councilmember Carroll Fife and School Board Director Van Cedric Williams on their re-elections. We celebrate Zac Unger to the role of Councilmember for District 1 and Rachel Latta to the role of School Board Director for District 1. We look forward to working with each of them towards equity, justice, and protection for all of our residents and all of our schoolchildren.
In addition to the billionaire-bought recalls of Mayor Thao and District Attorney Price, we are disappointed by the defeat of Jovanka Beckles for California State Senate.
We are also angry that Target, Walmart, and other big retailers successfully bought the passage of Prop. 36, which will roll back progressive criminal justice reform at the state level. And we are broken hearted at the failure of Prop. 6, which would have banned forced prison labor.
This election was a tough one. It is a reminder that we must be even bolder and join together across our differences against the billionaires, bullies, and bigots to chart a better future for all of us.
Oakland Rising Action’s long-term agenda has prepared us for this moment and the road ahead. No matter who is in power, we forward a vision of Oakland that realizes our shared dreams of health, happiness, safety, and opportunity for all.
This is the moment to unite our power to build on our past victories, defend our communities, and organize TOGETHER to advance our vision of a California where everyone without exception can thrive.
In Solidarity,
Pecolia Manigo

Oakland Ballot Measures
Crime is decreasing in Oakland thanks to violence prevention programs
championed by Mayor Sheng Thao, and the mayor is helping the city recover from the pandemic while balancing the budget and preserving important programs. The recall would remove key leadership and cause chaos when we need to keep making progress on these serious issues. What’s more, the recall is primarily funded by one right-wing Piedmont hedge fund manager, not local residents.
District Attorney Pamela Price is serious about safety, and she’s making progress: Oakland has seen a 33% drop in crime, including fewer burglaries and homicides. She continues to support victims and hold people who do harm accountable, while prioritizing crucial violence prevention programs. This recall is funded by a few wealthy elites and real estate developers who want to overturn the majority’s choice and destroy these gains. In fact, the recall has already cost the county over $4M that could be better used for community safety programs.
Funds wildfire prevention through tree management, site inspections, and agency coordination with a parcel tax on the affected hill zone, exempting low- income households.
Fund Wildfire Prevention
Renews an essential existing community safety measure that funds violence reduction services & community policing.
Fund Violence Prevention
Adds stronger anti-corruption rules: limits gifts from lobbyists, addresses commissioner conflicts of interest, and ensures capacity to implement voter-approved programs like Democracy Dollars.
Strengthen Public Ethics Oversight
Statewide Ballot Measures
Funds $10B for school repairs, modernizations, and safety improvements for public school and community college students, who are disproportionately low-income and BIPOC.
Fund Our Schools and Community Colleges
Removes discriminatory language from California’s Constitution, protecting marriage rights for LGBTQIA+ and interracial couples.
Protect the Freedom to Marry in the CA Constitution
Authorizes $10B for climate resilience projects, focusing on water, wildfire, and coastal protection.
Fund Environmental Justice
Allows local governments to approve affordable housing and infrastructure bonds with 55% voter approval.
Make It Easier to Fund Housing and Infrastructure Projects
Bans forced prison labor and involuntary servitude.
Ban Slavery in California
Helps working people pay their bills, have a roof over their heads, and get the healthcare they need. Prevents crime by helping more Californians have what they need to thrive.
Raise State Minimum Wage to $18/Hour
Empowers local governments to prevent excessive rent increases. We all deserve to stay in the places we call home with stable, affordable housing.
Make It Easier for Californians to Have Rent Control
Increases penalties for low-level crimes, undermining progress and taking hundreds of millions of dollars away from rehabilitation, crime prevention, and criminal justice reform.
Roll Back Progressive Criminal Justice Reform

Oakland Rising Action’s endorsement process is community-led by
- working-class, immigrant, and people of color leaders;
- flatlands voters;
- people born and raised in Oakland; and
- progressive policy experts.
Our Oakland voter guide and endorsement process identifies candidates who most align with our values, vision, and strategy for our city. We then get out the vote in Oakland’s disenfranchised communities through education, mobilization and turnout. Fundamentally, we are shifting power to make Oakland a city that champions equity and centers residents most impacted by systemic racism, poverty, environmental hazards, policing, and mass incarceration.
Oakland Rising Action is a member of the Working Families Party (WFP). WFP is building a multiracial party of working people to transform our state and country. We’re a party that fights for workers over bosses and people over the powerful. We want an America which realizes the promise – unrealized in our history – of freedom and equality for all.
CA WFP has endorsed federal, state, and down-ballot candidates that represent progressive values that are core to transforming California into a state that prioritizes working people and our most vulnerable communities.
